Dear community member:

The American Literacy Corporation (ALC) is requesting your participation in the 100 Men Reading Day VI.  The 100 Men Reading Day VI will be held on March 2, 2010 (which is Dr. Seuss’s birthday) from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Harrisburg and Steelton Elementary Schools.  It will consist of men to students from pre-K to 6th grade.  The purpose of the 100 Men Reading Day is to provide an opportunity for men to mentor students and encourage students to read.

Each reader will spend about 25 minutes visiting three different groups of students.   During this time, readers will share books, talk about what they do for a living, and encourage the students to do well in school.  Stories that address character development such as honesty, kindness, sharing and acceptance, as well as, ones that are entertaining could be chosen.

Before the readers go to the schools, they will all meet at 7:15 a.m. at Camp Curtin Elementary School Cafeteria, 2900 N 6th Street, Harrisburg, PA for the orientation and breakfast.  During the orientation, a continental breakfast will be served.  Guests will be given pointers when reading to a group and other pertinent information.  Books will be available for men who may not have any.

The 100 Men Reading Day is an initiative of The ALC.  The ALC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.  The purpose of the ALC is to design and implement supplemental literacy programs that will promote the importance of learning to elementary school students.  Since January 2001, The ALC has promoted reading to over 85,000 children.

Thank you for considering this request.  For more information about the ALC, please visit www.superreader.org or call 717 232-6656.

Floyd Stokes
