Susquehanna on March 9

In March 2016, approximately 510 men participated. The program continues to draw men from diverse backgrounds. The majority of the men participate year after year while inviting others to participate. The program has become an effective way for men, in the school and library setting, to encourage children to read and be positive role models.

Attention – We are partnering with Sci Tech and John Harris High School again for the career piece. Men from various professions will visit the school to share career paths with the students.

The 500 Men Reading Week and Career Exploration is a program of The ALC which is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. The mission of the ALC is to partner with community-based organizations, and other institutions with programs targeting educational enhancement and development for elementary-aged students. Since January 2001, the ALC has partnered with various organizations to encourage over 200,000 children to read.

Thank you for investing in our children and community. If you have any questions, please contact Jamar Johnson at / (717) 307-0991 or me at (717) 580-5429, or for the Career Exploration Leland Nelson at (717) 554-0586.

Quote from Gary D. St. Hilaire, President and CEO of Capital BlueCross:

“It is an honor to serve as the co-chair of this year’s 500 Men Reading Week. One of the most important things we can do for our children is to instill a love of reading from an early age,” said Gary D. St. Hilaire, President and CEO of Capital BlueCross. “A passion for reading will benefit a child throughout their lifetime, increasing their abilities for critical thinking and communication; not to mention the relaxation that a good book can provide. I applaud Floyd Stokes for positively impacting so many young lives in our community and I am proud to be a part of this important project.”

Quote from Ron Claiborne of ABC Good Morning America:

"It was luck or fate that connected me to Floyd and his wonderful project. I am honored to play a small part in a very big event. In a world in which young people -- and many not-so-young -- are distracted and mesmerized by video, TV, smartphones and a relentless hypnotizing kaleidoscope of dazzling imagery, it is more important than ever that young people are grounded in the basics. Reading skills are basic. Reading is the key that unlocks the door to learning, that opens and nurture the imagination. And it's fun! Anything we can do to instill the habit of reading and a love for reading is a vital public service; it is an investment in the success of our children. We owe 500 Men Reading a huge debt of gratitude for what it does."

Quote from J.P. Bilbrey, President and CEO of The Hershey Company:

“Serving as co-chair of 500 Men Reading Week with the American Literacy Corp is a great privilege. As an avid reader myself, I am happy to do my part in sharing my love of reading for learning, for being entertained or escaping through your imagination. I invite you to join me and my co-chair, Gary St. Hilaire, and hundreds of other men, in participating in this unique literacy event to share the importance of reading with children and provide positive, diverse role models for kids throughout central Pennsylvania.”
