Meet Floyd Stokes
Floyd Stokes is the founder and executive director of the American Literacy Corporation (ALC) which is a non-profit organization established in August of 2000. The purpose of the ALC is to design and implement supplemental literacy programs that will promote the importance of reading to students up to fifth grade. On-going programs of the ALC include: The 500 Men Reading Week, The Children’s Literacy Festival, Library and School Tours, Head Start visits, and Parent Workshops.
He is the author of fifteen books: Teddy, Say Ahh! The Teeth Book, The Old Lady Who Lived in a Shoe, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, Popcorn, Bullying is Bad, My Glasses, AJ The Rooster, We Are Money Smart, Thank You, Healthy Habits with or without Diabetes, Johnny’s Lucky Day, It’s Not My Fault, Fly and My Inhaler. He co-authored Dress Up with his daughters Madison (age 11) and Olivia (age 7). His daughter Madison is the author of I Can Do It By Myself and Best Friends (chapter book).
Mr. Stokes is the recipient of several awards to include an honorary doctorate of humanities from Central Penn College, the James Patterson PageTurner Award, and John F. Kennedy High School in Mound Bayou, MS renaming the library The Floyd “SuperReader” Stokes Library. In 2010, Mr. Stokes read to children all 50 states. Since 2000, Mr. Stokes has read to over 185,000 children.
He currently serves on the boards of The Neighborhood Center of the United Methodist Church, The Harrisburg Symphony, Dauphin County Library System and State Street Academy of Music.
Mr. Stokes was born and raised in Mound Bayou, Mississippi. He served six years in the U.S. Army (85’ to 91’). Afterwards, Mr. Stokes settled in Pennsylvania. He lives in Midtown Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
