2018 Writers and Illustrators Summer Camp

ALC Summer Camp 2018

aspire * achieve * amaze

at Harrisburg University

July 9-13, July 16-20

Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm

The American Literacy Corporation (ALC) will host the 3rd Annual Central PA Writers and Illustrators Summer Camp – aspire • achieve • amaze at Harrisburg University. This ten-day camp will be held Monday through Friday, July 9th through 20th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. The camp is for students going into the 3rd through 12th grade in the fall of 2018.

The theme for the camp is Fairy Tales and Folklores. Campers will read and study the classics and not so well known fairy tales and folklores. They will also write their own fractured and original fairy tales or folklores and illustrate pictures to go with the stories. Campers will also perform short skits of original and fractured fairy tales and folklores. “I am excited about this year’s theme. Teachers have been working hard already to prepare for next year. We will have so much fun and keep the campers excited and interested,” says camp founder and organizer Floyd Stokes.

Last year, nearly 100 students in grades 3rd thru 12th attended the camp. We continue to receive rave reviews from the parents and campers. We contribute much of the success to the generous community partners, dedicated and talented teachers, supportive parents, and engaged campers. We hire the best teachers from local school districts from a diverse background to reflect the campers.

  • Early Bird before January 1 – registration is $375 for both weeks.
  • January 1 thru March 14 – registration is $400 from for both weeks.
  • After March 15 – registration is $425 per camper for both weeks.
  • After June 1 – registration is $450 per camper for both weeks.
  • Military, veteran, and first responders’ camp fee is $350 for both weeks.
  • An additional option is for one-week only registrants, price is $250 per week. One-week registrants will be place on a wait list upon receipt of $50 registration fee. Priority will be given to two week registrants. To get the full benefit of the camp, campers should register for the entire two weeks though we know this is not possible for everyone.

Cost includes: writing and art supplies, camp T-shirt, lunch, morning and afternoon snack, admission to Whitaker Center and other field trips. Group discount and scholarships might be available after March, if scholarship funds are received from granter. Fewer funds for scholarships are available due to the loss of funds from a major funder as the funds were only available for two years.

The 3rd Annual Central PA Writers and Illustrators Summer Camp is a program of The ALC which is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Since 2000, the ALC has served the community by partnering with community-based organizations and other institutions with programs targeting educational enhancement and development for elementary-aged students.

Feedback from parents and campers about the Central PA Writers and Illustrators Summer Camp:

  • From my daughters: the food was awesome, our groups were fun, the afternoon activities were fun and open mic was cool!!!
  • She loved the illustration class.
  • Our granddaughter truly enjoyed her experience with this camp.
  • I had no idea how to write a poem or how to illustrate good but, at the end of the camp I can write a poem. I feel that I draw better and can tell a story with drawings (animation). The presenters taught us the material in a fun way.
  • Interacting with the staff & other kids was positive. Loved seeing the artwork other kids had.
  • Wanted more time to do activities for art & writing so a possible longer day.
  • I (Jack J.) would remember all of the awesome friends I made while at the camp.
  • Daphne had many positive memories, with staff and authors and illustrators. I do believe one of her biggest take aways was at open mic and getting to see so many other students and their work. It was very encouraging and gave ideas and room to grow seeing the older students’ work.
  • Isaiah had a very good interaction with Charles R. Smith, Jr. I was very happy about this connection. We will be buying his books.
  • Loved meeting the authors & illustrators.
  • My son became more comfortable with sharing in a group setting and speaking at a level above a whisper in public.
  • My daughter enjoyed the variety of activities, interacting with students and presenters and generally doing something worthwhile with her summer hours instead of just swimming.
  • Positive: Meeting Authors & Illustrators Negative: Not having enough sample books for tweens & teens. Not getting any feedback from authors or illustrators for campers writing samples or art work. Positive: Breaks between sessions Negative: Planned exercises Positive: Tasty lunches & snacks Negative: Small portions for tweens & teens
  • The students had an opportunity to interact with real authors and illustrators. My child in the 5th grade group liked the individual author/illustrator presentations so she could hear from the ones who weren't teaching her grades. The teachers were very attentive to camper needs as everyday my child came home excited about the day and sharing what was done. I was grateful that camp staff were waiting to greet and direct us on the first day and every day. So by the last two days I was able to drop off my child and watch as they walked in knowing that camp staff was there to lead them in.
  • Being older (13) he commented that the authors were mostly children's book authors. He said "They need to have teen authors represented."
  • My child had a good time and made friends.
  • My daughter was excited to share with us what happened each day, which made us excited for her and the other campers.
  • She loved hearing from authors regarding illustration and writing.
  • Opportunity to enhance my daughter's interest in illustration. Also liked the physical fitness each day.
  • They show my son how to draw better and he feel good. He is so happy and me too.
  • Meeting Ms. Sharon Flake
  • I actually don't know enough superlatives to accurately describe this camp. What an outstanding experience for my daughter! I have seen her creativity and confidence blossom more in these four days than in her high school career thus far. I cannot commend you enough for your care and encouragement. The overall experience was so amazing that I scarce can believe it was the first year. Bravo!!! Kudos to all involved!!!
  • Working with the Disney animator, entering and winning the writing contest, meeting new friends.
  • Jenna and Chelsea loved every part of camp. It was perfectly done. Their parents and grandparents have no complaints. We all wish for more days of camp.
  • Karlye liked writing her story and that she got an award for doing it.
  • Camp flowed well. Sadie wants to come again next year.
  • Her creativity was enhanced as it relates to writing.
  • I like the diversity that my kid experienced. Overall very positive experience. Thank you Floyd and all the staff.
  • It was all a positive experience. The combination of writing and illustration classes was wonderful.
  • Great opportunity to learn from published authors!
  • I really enjoyed the positive atmosphere!
